EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
