Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
