Sam Fender received the prestigious award last month in Newcastle

The star has given the complete sum of his £25,000 award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his third album his work was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages had in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I did around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money assisted locations that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties caused by floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Other venues obtained funding support in improving facilities and technical equipment that helped musicians and fans.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his honor funds to charitable organizations.

Back when they received the award in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, vocalist the singer declared that the group would donate their prize money to the organization the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer she split her bounty across multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," the artist shared with the media.

Two years ago, the band donated their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their act, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated artist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched another person's life."

Recently, the trust announced it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The first in the city and the other in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who purchase "shares" in the properties.
