Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Leader and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded the detainment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I refuse to back down. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard members were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, per reports. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Extra barriers was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in the past month, sparking protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on Monday banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "justify and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has stated he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a commander-in-chief to send regular army in states that are unable to put down an insurrection or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 cities, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Statistics shows that most violent crime nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, murders were down 31% to 278 through August, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on Wednesday revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
