Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
